The billion-user milestone is the number to remember, because everything else this week follows from it. Once a billion people are using these systems daily, labeling stops being optional—hence Anthropic's watermarks, Apple's photo certification, and Spotify's AI tags. Once the assistants are that big, they need a business model, hence ads in ChatGPT and OpenAI's commercial-leadership reset. Once the compute required to serve them exceeds what any balance sheet can carry, Wall Street builds a $500 billion vehicle and a futures market to hedge it. And once the agents are capable enough to be useful, they're capable enough to hack a gym, fight each other, and find a Zoom vulnerability in 20 prompts—which is why liability, not persuasion, is starting to look like the mechanism that actually governs this. The frontier stopped being the story this week. The plumbing became it.
